2024 Season Overview: KC Ensor-Smith

KC Ensor-Smith's second season in the Investchem Formula 1600 Championship was a defining year that showcased his exceptional growth and determination as a rising star in South African motorsport. Competing against some of SA's finest single-seater talents, the multiple national karting champion achieved remarkable results across the championship's seven rounds. This culminated in him finishing as Vice-Champion and earning himself R100 000.

KC kicked off the season with a podium finish, securing third overall and setting a new lap record. He became the first Formula 1600 driver to lap the Killarney International Raceway in under one minute and 15 seconds, demonstrating his enthusiasm for challenging for top honours.

Heading north to the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit for Round 2, the Witbank resident improved to finish second overall, following a double-podium result. He also set the fastest-ever lap in a Formula 1600 around the Johannesburg circuit, underscoring his growing prominence.

Zwartkops Raceway hosted the third round, in which KC again recorded the fastest lap in both races but finished second overall behind his championship rival.

KC delivered a flawless performance at Gqeberha's Aldo Scribante Racetrack, claiming his maiden pole position, two race wins, and the fastest laps in both races. This clean sweep revitalized his championship bid, narrowing the gap to his main rival.

Another race victory, the fastest lap and a remarkable recovery to finish fourth in Race 2 saw KC finish as runner-up at the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit, his grit and determination again on display.

Following mechanical issues during the return leg to Killarney, KC endured his most challenging weekend of the season. Needing to make up ground in his championship bid, he lost valuable points following a fourth and tenth-place finish.

No longer able to control his destiny, KC's impressive season didn't end as he had hoped, claiming fourth overall in the final round championship. Despite his best efforts, he fell short and finished as the championship runner-up before the series is replaced by the MSA4 category in 2025.

Internationally, KC represented South Africa with distinction. Competing in the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy, he finished third in the Grand Final, marking his arrival on the global stage. His adaptability to Formula Ford machinery and wet weather conditions impressed many.

Away from the circuit, KC's motorsport achievements were recognised by Motorsport South Africa when he was awarded his Protea blazer at the MSA National Awards held at Emperor's Palace, Johannesburg, on Sunday, 1 December.

KC's ability to consistently challenge for victories, set lap records, and recover from setbacks defines him as a future star. His international success at Silverstone further validates his talent, proving he can compete with the best on any stage. As the series transitions to MSA4 in 2025, Ensor-Smith is expected to continue his meteoric rise, potentially stepping into higher single-seater categories. His relentless drive and proven skill set position KC as one of South Africa's most exciting prospects. The journey is just beginning, and the motorsport world eagerly anticipates the next chapter in his career.
