Third for De Wet at Penultimate Regional Round

The Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship in Benoni featured Centurion youngster Luhan de Wet securing a third-place trophy following three fiercely contested races amidst extreme heat at the Formula-K Raceway.

Luhan came into the weekend ranked second in the championship and trailing his championship rival by 35 points. A strong outing and a final round offering double points motivated him to keep the pressure on.

Having topped the time sheet in Qualifying, Luhan lined up ahead of his regional championship rival and alongside his Xtreme Racing Team stablemate. From the start of the opening heat, Luhan defined the pace and led until a few laps before the end when he was pushed wide under braking, causing him to run wide and lose two places.

Heat 2 would see Luhan, a student at Louis Leipodlt Primary, again finish third following another fierce battle for the top step. But his best result of the day came in the final heat, where he claimed the runner-up position to finish third overall, closing the points gap to his rival ever so slightly.

"I am somewhat disappointed that we couldn't convert our pole position into a win," stated Luhan. "Having led most of the opening race, I knew I'd be challenged. Despite defending my line, I lost out on a potential victory. From there onwards, it was about being consistent and waiting for an opportunity. Unfortunately, there weren't many, and we finished third today. Every race is a learning curve, and the more I learn, the better driver I become. Thank you to my team, my family, and everyone for the support throughout the weekend. I appreciate it very much."

The championship's final round will be held at Zwartkops Kart Raceway on 30 November.
