Ensor-Smith Heads to Silverstone for Walter Hayes Trophy
KC Ensor-Smith, the 2024 Investchem Formula 1600 Vice Champion, will take on the world’s best Formula Ford competitors this weekend as the 2024 edition of the Walter Hayes Trophy gets underway at the Silverstone Circuit. KC will be one of six South African drivers competing at the event, and all participants will drive equal machinery powered by the 1600cc Ford Kent engine, ensuring a level playing field for all.
The weekend starts with qualifying races on Saturday, where over 100 competitors begin the event. Driven by professional and amateur racers, competitors battle through a series of heats and pre-finals to reach Sunday’s all-important knockout phase. The knockout rounds start with competitors aiming to secure a qualifying position on the grid to advance to the next round. After several races, the remaining competitors participate in three final events, culminating with the last 36 racers competing in the Grand Final. This final event determines the Walter Hayes Trophy winner, the most prestigious award in Formula Ford, a title that could significantly boost KC's racing career.
“It is certainly a weekend I am looking forward to. Not only will I be competing against the best in the world, but I will also be taking on the iconic Silverstone Circuit, where many motorsport champions, most notably F1 champions, have come before me. The competition is also set up very much like an international karting event with practices and qualifying heats before progressing to Sunday's final. I'll be giving my all and hoping for the best,” said KC.
